Donovan Traded
PC just pulled off a trade, which has sent Shean Donovan to the Ottawa Senators for Peter Schaefer. The Bruins will take on what looks like an additional $1.25 million in salary cap but Schaefer has a lot more offensive upside than Donovan. Defencively they are both similar, and while lacking Donovan's size Schaefer will be a tremendous asset on the Bruins penalty kill. The last two seasons have been the best offencively for Schaefer, with 32-64-96 totals in 155 games. So is anyone else liking this trade as much as me? It could be that because I am in the Ottawa area I see and hear more about him so my view is askew.

I just came to post on this and you had beat me to it. I like the trade. We needed more offense(plus some D) from everyone last year. Plus proven NHL talent on this roster is a plus. This is a guy who scored 20 a couple seasons ago...(Donovan got 18 too once - but Dono didn't look capable of 20 here).
So where does he slot? If he is the 3rd line left wing... does this leave Pj on the first or second line at left or a move back to right for Pj on the third line? Line combos certainly will be an interesting subject.
Kobasew Savard Murray
Sturm Bergeron Bochenski
Schaefer Kessel Axelsson
Thornton Mowers Reich
scratch Chistov - not to mention what if one of the youngsters bump any of the above with Karsums and Krejci being canidates.
The more I look at the above line up the more Bergeron looks like your 3rd line center. You need him matching up against the other teams number one on D-zone draws.
What do you guys think?
Wow, I think Boston struck gold in this one. Schaefer is terrific on the PK. He struggles with scoring consistency, and has with both the Nucks and Sens but who cares? He can still get 40-50 points.
A good deal for the Bruins.
I don't like this trade!
I was a big Dono fan.
Hopefully Schaefer's play this season will change my veiw - I will give him a chance.

Actually, I've been thinking that he might fit in the left wing slot on the top line. He's pretty good along the boards and spent time in that area on the PP last year.
It just drives me crazy that they are basically one very good left wing away from a high-scoring top line!
There's also some talk about the possibility of Kessel shifting to LW next year.
I was listening to the team 1200 in Ottawa this afternoon and on came Donovan! He is very happy to be playing for Ottawa. He came from Carleton Place which is maybe 20 minutes outside of the city. It almost seemed like he was having trouble containing himself. :)
Good interview.
Why would Donovan want to contain himself when his opponents can do it so well for him? (zing!)
I had such high hopes for Dono last year, and he failed miserably. Even with as bad as the team was last season, his lack of anything but speed on the 4th line was noticeable. It got to the point where you just *knew* that if he had the puck below the faceoff dots, he wasn't going to score. Breakaways, 2-on-1s low, he did nothing, and I think by the end of the season Reich was higher than Dono on the PK list.
In any event, you pick up a defensively sound 40-50 point player who still has a bit of potential in exchange for a 17-20 point player who brought a little muck, but that's about it. Good deal by Chiarelli.
