Next years cap

So some quick math, the B's have 12 signed contracts totaling ~33.5 million for next season. They have 4 rfa's which at a minimum will cost 2-3 million. This means if the cap increases to the rumored 46 million that the Bruins, with a minium of 36 million commited and 4-7 roster spots to fill, will be able to spend around 10 million. The biggest need is at D were there are only two returning under contract, Chara and Mara. Jurcina and Alberts are RFA (included in RFA costs above) and will presumable be returning at shortish money so this leaves 2-3 D spots to fill. The general hope is Brad Stuart returns, chewing up probably close to 3.5 million and lets face it your 6th and 7th D will be league min guys.

This leaves 5.5 million to fill 4 spots at foward. Marco Sturm? Does he return at 2-3 million? Or do you get Patrice a new wing at about that much, either way you are now down to about 2.5 million to fill your last couple roster spots? Wayne Primeau will be off the books and probably will not be back, but my guess is that these last 3 forward spots will be filled with by one or two rookies from Providence at league min and a veteran pivot- I hate to say it like a Wayne Primeau.

Where am I going with this? I do not know, but at first blush it seems to me to upgrade the team you will need to drop Sturm and Stuart and replace them with better players at slighly more money. If Sturm or Stuart return then you hope for someone from Providence to really step in and fill the void.

What? And lose 2/3 of the players we acquired in the Thornton trade? But what about our future? LOL

Sorry I'm not following ya. You lost me in he final paragraph. Why would dropping Stuart for a more expensive player help us? One of things we need is defence isn't it? A more expensive forward won't help.

Did you mean to say we should drop Sturm and Stuart and get more players at slightly less money (maybe more money combined)?

Clarify for me dude :)

no- my meaning was more that we "could" drop stuart and/or sturm and replace both with slightly better players if they can be found..... maybe a 5 mill 2nd dman and or a 3.5 2nd line left wing....whoever that maybe.... or resign these guys at slightly less than above and use the left over money to increase the quality of your 3rd and 4th line guys...
