it will be interesting to find out what the issue is. i for one have thought he doesnt look healthy for a 19 year old, he seems to often have bags under his eyes. he also seems slow to get up from time to time when knock downed.... both of these could be unrelated, but observations i have been wondering if anyone else has noted?

His hockey has slipped and he does not play the way he should - if there is a medical issue then it would explain alot of his inconsistent play.
I was going to do a post on how to get him going but now that it may be a medical issue I will hold off until more is released.
My best wishes go to Phil and his family at this time.

Thanks for the news, Neb. From the CBC:

BOSTON (CP) - Boston Bruins rookie Phil Kessel left the team Monday to be treated for a medical issue not related to hockey, according to a release from the player's family.

The 19-year-old did not travel with the Bruins to Montreal, where they will play the Canadiens on Tuesday night.

In their statement, Kessel's family did not specify what he was being treated for and offered no update on his condition. They also asked for privacy on the matter.

Kessel has five goals and nine points while appearing in all 27 Bruins games this season. He last played in Boston's 5-1 loss to New Jersey on Saturday night.

The Bruins recalled centre Yan Stastny and goaltender Hannu Toivonen from Providence of the AHL.

Where does it say anything about being in the hospital? Misleading or presumptuous headlines... one of my many pet peeves. Hope he's ok.

Thanks for verifying it neb. You know, the more I think about it the more concerned I get. I mean, *really* concerned. This seems like such an unusual press release...

I hope he is OK, but it could be Alcohol or drug abuse. Who really knows.

Being also a KC Royals fan, I'm getting bad memories of 2006 spring training when top prospect Zack Greinke announced he was fighting depression (insert Royals joke here) and wound up not returning until the season was almost over.

The way the media is presenting this, it sounds pretty ominous. I just hope that whatever Kessel's fighting, it's not serious and that he can overcome it quickly so that he's back on the ice soon.

Thanks Orr. I read that as well. hopefully it is not true and the family will report something different tomorrow.

Either way it is the best cancer to get. If they got it early he could live a perfectly normal life.

Thanks for the link, #4.

Disturbing, but it happens to people every day. You just have to fight it and move forward. Best wishes to Phil Kessel and his family.
