Mara Shipped to Broadway
Paul Mara was shipped to the NY Rangers this afternoon for defencman Aaron Ward. This is nothing too exciting. It will save the Bruins $250,000 in cap space for next year, and will make the Bruins better defencively. Mara, although better lately, has never lived up to last years offencive output. This fact was amplified by his poor defencive play in the first half of the season.
Ward, on the Bruins, will likely be a top four defencman. He is not a power play specialist, but should see a lot of time on the penalty kill. The key with Ward is that he has played 78 career playoff games and has three Stanley Cup rings (2 Detroit, 1 Carolina).
I will post tonight after everything dies down, to discuss the other trades in the NHL. At them moment I believe the Bruins have improved, but other teams like the Islanders, Buffalo, Atlanta, and Ottawa have improved more.

I agree with your last comment--at least on paper those other teams have become better. But I think the B's have yet to play up to their full potential, and have only come near that potential in a few games this season. So there is still hope. We have a LOT of talent on the roster.
This trade was basically a swap of players who didn't fit in their respective systems. Neither was reported to be happy. Mara will likely do very well, and Ward will likely play much better defensively than Mara did under Lewis. So both teams win.
But I'm still wondering if there isn't one more trade coming that hasn't been announced...
Yep, I was right -- there it is. They traded Boyes to the Blues for Dennis Wideman. Too bad. Boyes has a lot of potential, but really slipped this year.
I agree with #4 - this is a nothing trade. It doesn't really improve or hurt our team much either way.
Just a trading of players that neither team wanted.
Trade is a small win in that we lose defenceive liability, Mara. However, Mara like Boyes (who was also traded) is having an off year and has played alot better in this league - maybe a change of senery is what he needed.
scenery - sorry, I am tired!
