Bruins Destroy Islanders!!!

Boston played their 1st exhibition game last nite and pounded The New York Islanders 3-1. I know that it is only pre-season but it is a great way to start - winning is contagious regardless of when it happens. Good to see the Bruins' juggernaut started already!

Jeff Hoggan had 2 goals and Chuck Kobasew added a single.

The real hero of the game, however, was Shawn Thornton who was welcomed from the fans at Mile One Stadium in St. John's NL. with a standing ovation. Shawn played 4 seasons in the Newfoundland capital and was a fan favorite who averaged 303 penalty minutes per season (he was one of the most popular players to ever lace up for the Baby Leafs in St. John's - newfies love beer and Fighting!!!). Shortly into the game Shawn had a one-sided fight with The Islanders tough guy, Kip Brennan and received another standing "O" for his decisive win! This fight and win inspired The Bruins and they took all the momentum from there as they dominated play for the remainder of the game.

Game notes:

- Thornton wins big fight over Brennan to set the tone.
- Later in the game Brennan bests Chara in a fight - this just goes to show you how tough
Thornton really is!
- Hoggan scored 2 goals.
- Thomas and Sigalet split the duties and from all accounts both were amazing!
- Bruins' prospect and one of my favs, Milan Lucic, spilled Matt Spiller in a fight during the 3rd
period to top off an almost flawless nite for the B's.

3 stars as picked by me:

1. Shawn Thornton - big win in his fight to set the tone.
2. Jeff Hoggan - 2 goals.
3. Jordan Sigalet - no goals allowed in almost 31 minutes of play.

Great start to the Bruins' season (even if it is only pre-season). I can smell the Cup already!

Go Bruins Go!!!

Thanks for the report. I was really looking forward to seeing (or at least hearing) this game when it was widely reported that I was going to be able to. But no matter what I tried nothing worked. The Center Ice TV package, which I subscribe to, hasn't started showing games yet. The NHL web site had the game listed, with the correct starting time and everything, but merely played a replay game from last season. And the Bruins web site had a link to the Online version of Center Ice, which I signed up for, but either gave an error when I tried to connect to the game, or alternately listed the game as Blacked Out. It was all a huge waste of my time.

Not a very good start to the pre-season for me personally, I must say. Grrrrrrr!

(Sorry for the rant)

Did you actually attend the game?

Buff, I'm assuming you attended this game? That's an awfully detailed game description for something that probably wasn't on TV!
